the ukulele and the mailboat

I hopped on the mailboat cruise from Portland, Maine that ferries through the Casco Bay Islands.  Residents use it to get groceries or visit friends.  They bring their dogs and children with them, they look cheery and warm accessorized with coffees and smartphones.

At one point during the lap around the bay, the lower deck emptied out except for a man texting away, indecisive about his hair, he kept putting it up in a hair tie similar to mine and taking it out again.  A woman sat across the way playing a ukulele and she looked up at me and our eyes met in the awkward way that strangers tend to connect.  She looked back down and continued to play even though the engines were so loud you couldn’t hear her.
